溢れ返る情報をどのように受け取るか。高度に情報化した社会において、

The faculty of media literacy is a powerful resource for understanding our
lives today because the modern world is increasingly more flooded with information.
We must be ready to distinguish the information that is useful and reliable from the
rest, but sometimes we inevitably give up the struggle to pick out what is valuable
from the info-storm.
I would like to suggest a new way of picking precious words and meaning
out from the flood of information, from the perspective of an artist, through a piece
titled “Specimen of Words.” For this piece, I decided to focus on a specific type
of media, weekly comic magazines, because the information contained in such media
is always fresh and strongly reflects the age. Many different kinds of comic
magazines for a broad range of demographics are published in Japan and are widely
shared among some generations. Manga is an ideal source material for my work
because its depth and variety allows me to choose words from a vast array of cultural
perspectives that span different genders, sexual orientations, and social, economic,
and political groups. This social diversity results in a correspondingly diverse set
of language to select from, including everything from new slang to rigid academic
styles.
My method for presenting the words I selected from manga was to paint
pages white, cutting out all original elements except for those I specifically selected.
Sentences and language fragments are presented severed from their original stories
and contexts. All extracts in “Specimen of Words” invite unique interpretation
by each viewer because of the luck of their particular contexts and perspectives.
I hope that people who view this piece will consider the shifts in meaning as they
reflect on the words as they may have existed in their original context as well as in
the new context in which they perceive them.
